Various – You Heard It Here First!

Various – You Heard It Here First! Vol.1 2008

Various – You Heard It Here First! Vol.2 2010

26 original versions of some of the most enduring classics
of the 1950s and 1960s.

These tracks embrace some of the greatest country, soul, pop, rock`n'roll and R&B tunes ever recorded. We may never know why these songs did not become hits first time around, but musical inferiority is certainly not among the reasons why they didn't. Some of these originals are well known, others are hardly known at all. Most people with a passion for rock`n'roll will know that Richard Berry wrote and recorded the original "Louie Louie", but hardly anyone will know that the Kingston Trio and Mark James did "Get Together" and "Suspicious Minds" before the Youngbloods and Elvis Presley did. Hear how "Rock Around The Clock" sounded three years before Bill Haley and the Comets got to it, or how the Crickets "Fought The Law" almost half a decade before the Bobby Fuller Four and 15 years before the Clash did. Find out where Led Zeppelin acquired the source material for "Whole Lotta Love" and the Animals got "Baby let Me take You Home" from. Marvel at how closely the later hit versions were often modelled on these originals, and wonder how come they weren't hits in their own right.

Jim Keays fronted the successful Master's Apprentices until they broke up in the U.K. 1971. This marked a career change and he returned to Australia, where he worked for Go-Set magazine, formed the Rock On Agency, and appeared at the Mulwala Rock Festival in April 1972. In March 1973, he starred in the Australian version of the Who's Tommy and in January 1974, Keays participated in the third annual Sunbury Festival.
Keays then returned to music, recording his debut solo album, The Boy From the Stars, a concept album about an extraterrestrial visitor who attempts to warn people of the earth's imminent destruction. Keays, playing the role of the boy from the stars, wrote most of the music and all of the lyrics. "Kid's Blues"/"&Inter-Planetary Boogie" (December 1974) and "The Boy From the Stars"/"Take It on Easy" were released as singles and Keays undertook an ambitious tour in support of the album, but due to the size of the show, only three concerts were staged.
The anti-drug song "Give It Up"/"Love Is" was released in June 1975. He then formed Jim Keays' Southern Cross with Mick Elliot, Rex Bullen (keyboards), George Cross (bass), and Rick Brewer (drums). They released a reworking of the Masters Apprentices' "Undecided"/"For Someone" in December 1975, by which time the lineup had changed to Peter Laffy (guitar), Ron Robinson (bass), and John Swan.
In 1977, Keays formed the Manning/Keays Band with Phil Manning. The next year, Keays formed the Jim Keays Band with Ron Robinson, James Black (guitar), and David Rowe (drums). Guitarists John Moon and Geoff Spooner replaced Black, and by 1979, the band had evolved into the Keays with a revamped lineup of Moon, Bruce Stewart (guitar), Peter Marshall (bass), and Nigel Rough (drums). In early 1980, the band began recording an album which was never finished due to Stewart's ill health. The single "Lucifer Street"/"The Living Dead" was released and the band broke up.
The unfinished album was finally released in 1983 as a solo Jim Keays project titled Red on the Meter and "Lucifer Street" was re-released as a single. Keays then began working as a DJ until a new deal with Virgin in 1987 saw him fly to the U.K. to record with producer Craig Leon (the Ramones, the Bangles) and ex-Sweet guitarist Andy Scott. Two singles were released from the sessions: "Undecided"/"Dubcided" (July 1987) and "Reaction"/"Bates Motel" (October 1987). The Masters Apprentices then re-formed until Keays issued his second solo album in 1993, Pressure Makes Diamonds, on the Gemstone label. BMG reissued the album in mid-1994, after which Keays revived the Master's Apprentices again.
Keays and his fellow Master's Apprentices bandmembers were inducted into the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame in 1998. In 1999, Keays published his first book, His Master's Voice, which told the story of the Masters Apprentices. In January 2000, Raven Records reissued Keays' 1974 solo album, The Boy From the Stars, with five bonus tracks. The Mavis's contributed a cover of "The Boy From the Stars" to the original soundtrack of the Australian film Sample People in May 2000.

Of all the dumbed-down horror movie merchandise to come out of the 80's ('Toxic Crusaders,' anyone?) this might take the cake for stupidest. Some no-name studio musicians concocted these run-of-the-mill synth-pop tunes (many of which are covers of 50's and 60's novelty songs) and somehow got Robert Englund (aka Freddy Krueger) to lend his voice to them. It's all pretty bad, but 'Do The Freddy' at least has novelty appeal. I guess by '87, the 'Nightmare on Elm Street' franchise was pretty much a joke anyways.

Rare Michigan private press folk LP out of Westland. Great dark moody basement folk boom sound
heavily influenced by Gordon Lightfoot recorded at Pac Three, which was a garage style recording
studio. Features a phenomenally eccentric cover of "House Of The Rising Sun" which alone makes
the LP worth checking out. Pressed on no label in an edition of 500 copies, although, according
to the band, numerous copies were ruined in a flood.

A copy sold at ebay (Dec 22, 2012) for US $315.00!

Here is a UK folk LP. Colin Thompson is very talented both as a singer and as a guitarist. The arrangements are rather unusual.

"Karen & Colin from North Lincolnshire are continuing to gain a reputation as excellent performers. Originally a classical guitarist, Colin has combined elements of classical and traditional styles and the distinctive rhythms and decorations of Scottish pipe tunes which he has adapted for guitar. Karen has explored a range of musical genres from choral singing to punk rock.
Together they have created a refreshing sound, setting poetry to self-composed tunes, finding little known traditional ballads and performing well-known songs in an individual manner. This provides an interesting and varied repertoire of love songs, wicked tales, pirate ballads and much more, all underpinned by the couple's obvious love of their music and good-humoured banter."

Rocksteady is a music genre that originated in Jamaica around 1966. A successor to ska and a precursor to reggae, rocksteady was performed by Jamaican vocal harmony groups such as The Gaylads, The Maytals and The Paragons. The term rocksteady comes from a dance style that was mentioned in the Alton Ellis song "Rock Steady". Dances performed to rocksteady were less energetic than the earlier ska dances.

This album is a compilation containing 15 tracks by 10 different artists, produced by Clement Coxson Dodd. The first two cuts, "Never Love Again" and "My Last Love", are slow soulful vocal numbers by Alton Ellis and The Termites that highlight Jamaica’s love affair with American RnB and doo wop in their delivery and overall feel.

Even better is "Won’t You Come Home Now" by Ken and Delroy, who I believe are Ken Boothe and Delroy Wilson, with its interplay between guitar and piano and the strong vocals.

The second side starts off with an instrumental version of the Beatles’ "Darker Shade Of Black" with plenty of conga work by the Soul Vendors. "Get Ready Rock Steady" by the Soul Agents gets off to a good start with the chorus, but then gets a little long in the tooth. The "Groove To The Beat" is a melodic instrumental called by Keith & Ken.

Well, this has to be my all time favorite album. Everything on this album fits together so perfectly in harmony. Literally, the songs that are written by Chris, Chris & Lee (The “Ours” side of the LP) has amazingly well written songs with extremely well provided vocals by the 3 men. So, the A-Side opens with the wonderful track, “Flying Bird” – which, well is amazing? (I’ve come to the conclusion, that I suck at writing reviews.) The song starts off slowly, but kicks off into this amazing fast paced guitar playing. I love C, C & L. I’ve literally listened to this record so many times that it just seems like something I was born to do, it’s at the point I don’t even realize when the songs change… that being said, the song “Thank You” comes next, which is really great, because it’s like a folk-y song. Those are good. Then comes the humorous “The Pink Song” – which is about pink giraffes, and I love it. (Oddly, it reminds me of the adventures I’d have with my dog, Benji.) The song is good, I just dislike the ending, not the song ending, but this weird Daffy Duck-esque type of vocal part… “OH boy! That was wonderful!” – I just don’t get it. The fourth track is “Wish You Were Here” (No, not a cover of the Pink Floyd song.) anyways, the song is good, but the boys (Chris, Chris & Lee) Texan accents have one of them pronouncing “Wish” as “With” (aaand I with you were here!) still good though. The A-Side closes with the song “Once” – which is just a truly sad song, and I love it, all the songs (minus “The Pink Song“) seem to have seriously deep meaning, and they really make me think. (This is the point where I dedicate one to someone, so I dedicate “Once” to Benji.)

The flip side (The “Theirs” side of the LP) has amazing covers of the Mama’s and the Papa’s “California Dreamin’“, Crosby, Stills & Nash’s “Helplessly Hoping” and Herb Alpert’s “This Guys in Love With You“. Anyways, beyond that, as stated, the B-Side features an absolutely amazing version of Crosby, Stills & Nash’s “Helplessly Hoping” (I personally prefer it over the original.) So, then comes a cover of Donovan’s “Lalena” (which once again is better than the original – in my opinion), then a cover of Tim Hardin’s “If I Were a Carpenter” (I haven’t heard the original, nor any other version, so this one still stands as my favorite.) Next comes a cover of the Mama’s and the Papa’s “California Dreamin’” (There is no comparison to the original.) C, C & L’s version is good, but doesn’t compare to the original – though I do like how the swapped out the flute solo with a guitar solo. Then comes “This Guy’s In Love With You” (As originally done by Herb Alpert) I’ve heard several versions of this song, and they all stand pretty equal in my books. The boys version is still pretty great though. Finally, the album ends with the song “Samson” which isn’t really a cover of any song, (but it does feature lyrics from the song “Get Together” by the Youngbloods) it is also the only Gospel track on the LP (in my opinion) – anyways, this song has to be my favorite song of all time. Pretty much. Not even sure how I should even explain how much I love this song. It just rules over everything.

In closing, the album features absolutely no drums or percussion whatsoever, but just acoustic guitars, banjos and some bass played by Reid Lancaster (I have a joke that the album should be called “Chris, Chris & Lee… with Reid“, lol). Anyways, an all time classic that cost me a whole lot of money. ($132.00USD, which now doesn’t seem to come close to what I’ve paid for Jerry D. Brown, the Fuller Family or The Handless Organist).

Liner/Sleeve Notes:
“FLYING BIRD. I cried when my Flying Bird died. I sighed for a falling star on high. I ask you why. / Roses be made, roses will fade. Love will be laid, love goes its way. I ask you why. / I’ve been looked at love, looked at life as one. You made us two lives of one from none. You were the sea, and your waves washed over me; But waves come and leave and can never be believed. / Gonna sing my song just a little bit faster, Gonna sing my song tonight; Gonna do my best to put something past her, Gonna sing my song, gonna get a little pretty tonight. / Gonna sing my song with a whole lot of feelin’, Gonna sing my song tonight; Gonna get her so fast she won’t be believin’, Gonna sing my song, gonna get a little pretty tonight. / Love somewhere lies, behind your eyes. Don’t let them cry, if your Flying Bird dies.
WISH YOU WERE HERE. In the morning when I arise, All alone I realize, One more day has gone – I’m all alone. / Days of fun that now have passed, Make my drteams seem such a task; Emptiness has come – I’m alone. / Once my days were bright amd clear. Where have you gone? Why aren’t you here? / Now my time is fading fast, My next thought might be my last; In my dreams you’re near. I wish you were here.
THANK YOU. To sing is to live, to live is to love The sunshine and the rain, the darkness and the light. The one my thoughts contain. Thank you. A lover’s world, a baby’s mind To see a whole new world each morning that awakes To see each sunrise break. Thank you. For the air that enables me to breathe, Thank you for the thoughts of her that I conceive. / Thank you for my eyes that enables me to see, Thank you for a mind that is peaceful and free; Thank you for the hands that enable me to play, Thank you for the health that is with me every day; Thank you for my ears that enable me to hear, Thank you for a girl that to me is very dear. Thank you. For the golden strands that glow beneath the light, for the hope I have each morning and each night. / Thank you for the gardens of golden daffodils, Thank you for the desert, the valley, and the hills; Thank you for the sky of gorgeous baby blue. Thank you for giving me the power to thank you… for you.
THE PINK SONG. Well I was sitting on the porch of my Tennessee home; Me and my gun and my dog there all alone; I was waiting for the enemy to take me by surprise, So I could shoot my double barrel right between their eyes. / I looked to the east and I looked to the west; No one to harm me now – I’m alone I guess. I could see for miles and miles as bare as it could be Until I saw a pink giraffe a headed straight for me. / I loaded up my shotgun and pulled the trigger twice, Not a single bullet was released, my gun was cold as ice. So I yelled at ole faithful and headed for the hills, A poor man and a weary dog with nothing to conceal. / I ran to the left and I ran to the right. Finally after five whole days, the giraffe was out of sight. So I sat down and rested and made myself a brew And looked up to my surprise to see not one but two. / A dozen more began to come until I couldn’t see Nothing but a cloud of dust a headed straight for me; So I rolled over in the dirt to save my aching head, And all at once I realized, I’d fallen off my bed. / Pink giraffes are all right with me, as long as I can see naturally – but when I’m old and my eyes are through, Pink giraffes must stay in the zoo!
ONCE. Once there was a time When everything I saw seemed to be alive. Now how can I survive? / Once there was a time, I saw you thought Crystal stars of dew, when skies were always blue. / Where have you gone, What have I done, To lose the only one I love? / Once I freely loved. I was young and foolish. Now I’ve been hurt so much That nothing touches me. / What happened to me, that left me only to see When once there was a time, and once there was you.”
