Born in Orlando West, Soweto on November 2nd, 1951, young Sipho was recruited by Selby Ntuli to join the band The Beaters whilst a drummer for the school's cadets team. Upon Ntuli's death in 1978, he took over leadership of the band - which by then had renamed itself to Harari

Going solo after the band's demise and a competent multi-instrumentalist in his own right (drums, flute, piano, saxophone, kalimba, alto flute, timbales and African drums), his biggest commercial hit remains 1985's "Burn Out". Mr. Mabuse's "Chant of the Marching" album was banned in 1992, and he remains an active mentor for other young artists.

Although pop music enjoyed a larger audience and more expansive industrial structure at the time of rock’s emergence, the rhythm ‘n’ blues genre possessed a richer assortment of the artists who were to mold the new music’s style. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, the work of these artists provided the strongest and most consistent reason for the quality and appeal of the music itself.

Among the most prominent vocal/instrumental rhythm ‘n’ blues groups of the 1960s was the Chambers Brothers. George Chambers (born 1931) played bass, brothers Willie (1938) guitar, Lester (1940) harmonica and Joe (1942) guitar. They moved to Los Angeles from Lee County, Mississippi, during the early 1950s and their early records included magnificently rough, gospel-tinged versions of soul material, such as "People Get Ready," included in this collection.
Augmented in 1965 by ex-Manfred Mann Drummer Brian Keenan, they became an interracial group. After joining a major record company in 1967, they released several successful singles including “Time Has Come Today” and Ί Can’t Turn You Loose." The band’s black hippie image was taken up by the underground press and new white audiences.

The Chambers Brothers became true funk pioneers, with “Funky" as a catchy example of their innovation in the field. In 1972 the band split up, but re-formed in 1974, and continued to be popular through the 1970s. They were the supporting musicians in a recording session for Maria Muldaur in 1980.

The Brain Police were one of the relatively few psychedelic groups to emerge from San Diego in the late '60s, recording an unreleased album and single in 1968-1969 before splitting up. They played pretty average, if competent, psychedelic period rock with hard rock and baroque pop influences. In these respects, they were somewhat similar to a band they toured with in the Southwest, Steppenwolf, although the Brain Police had a lighter touch and no hit-worthy songs on the order of "Born to Be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride." After recording the unreleased album and failing to land a major-label contract, the frustrated band broke up at a local gig in which they opened for Steppenwolf. This unreleased LP was reissued on CD by Normal/Shadoks, as were songs cut for a 1969 single and poppier 1964-1966 cuts from singles by the Man-Dells and the Other Four (bands that Brain Police songwriters Norman Lombardo and Rick Randle played in prior to 1967).
