Formed in 1969 in São Paulo, SP, Brazil, the Pholhas was named as a suggestion from a friend of the members Paulo Fernandes, Oswaldo Malagutti, Helio Santisteban and Wagner Benatti during their first rehearsal.
The band used to play at dancing clubs in the city in order to achieve popularity. And it happened quickly.
The first album was recorded in 1972 by RCA Records, all sung in English in a time when this was not common in Brazil, where the language spoken is Portuguese.
The album DEAD FACES reached the # 1 position on the charts just 3 months after its launching, with 450,000 copies sold. This album won Pholhas' first gold album.

Then, the singles "She Made Me Cry", "I Never Did Before" and "Forever" sold over 300,000 copies and consecrated the band as a phenomenon on the national scene. Due to all this impact, RCA decided to release DEAD FACES also in Spain and South America in 1975, with the title HOJAS. It was the second gold album of the band.

In 1977, for contractual and strong pressure from RCA company, the band recorded the album THE SOUND OF DISCOTHEQUE containing covers of the main successes of Disco Music. It sold over 150,000 copies. In this same year, Helio Santisteban left the band. In his place entered keyboardist Marinho Testoni.

In 1977, a radical change of style ocurred. PHOLHAS decide to release a progressive rock album singing in Portuguese.

Верховодивший в этой группе так называемой Медуэй-сцены* гитарист Barry Bailey мог бы с лёгкостью присоединиться к Джону Майалу или к самим Роллинг Стоунз, но вместо этого решил взорвать музыкальную общественность того времени, играя со своей забытой ныне командой подлинно чистый, классический блюз в стиле Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated, и записал данный фантастический, частного прессования лонгплей, который первоначально был издан парнями самостоятельно тиражом всего в 30 экземпляров. Участники группы могли позволить себе при этом только минимум затрат, а потому сделали сами все художественные работы для обложки и этикетки пластинки, сами их отпечатали с простых, рисованных чёрно-белых заготовок. В итоге лишь один экземпляр этого альбома сейчас находится в архиве Джона Пила, в чьи же липкие руки попали остальные 29 экземпляров – доподлинно неизвестно. 

Этот, один из самых редких альбомов в мире и остро желанный почти с самого момента его выхода ещё в середине 1968-го, был записан в период 7-12 апреля того же года, в гостиной дома № 31 по улице Roberts Road города Rainham (графство Кент), в режиме моно и содержит четырнадцать блюзовых композиций. Большинство треков являются типичным продуктом той эпохи, но набор также включает в себя несколько самостоятельно сочинённых номеров. Как было сказано в небольшом обзоре газеты “Chatham Standard”, в номере за вторник 16 июля 1968 года, недавно выпущенный альбом представляет собой чрезвычайную редкость, как будто бы рецензент был хорошо осведомлён, что только двадцать девять частных лиц будут иметь его копии. Но, хвала Создателю, в 2013 году лейблом “Record Collector” были любовно репрессированы из забытья 500 экземпляров данного альбома и переизданы также на виниле в серии редких виниловых записей, в результате чего сей артефакт стал доступен хоть немного большему числу слушателей на радость всем нам!(инет)

Austin Grasmere and the late Brian Elliot had written a string of bubble gum hits when they approached ESP to produce an LP that would present their original creative ideas,
far removed from the formulas of the market place.
They said that they had a Connecticut tribe with which they would bring to fruition the ideas that they needed to express.
ESP gave them Onno Scholtze, and for three days they labored to fulfill their dream.
There actually was a Connecticut tribe of sorts, although it consisted not of Indians but of their close Anglo friends, with several children included.
They can all be heard on the epic CALEDONIA.

During the early 1970s Joakim recorded  mysterious, shamanistic and highly psychedelic “folk music” infused with incredible soundscapes of derailed fuzzed out violins, soaring guitars, rattling hand percussion, droning vocals and pulsating bass rhythms. The album was called Jola Rota and was originally released in 1972. It sold 300-400 copies and was then withdrawn and the reaming copies discarded making Jola Rota a much rumored and sought after Swedish droned-out and mesmerizing psychedelic artifact. The legendary Swedish musicians on this album include Pugh Rogefeldt, Göran Lagerberg, Mats Glenngård and Thomas Netzler. It’s now available again from Subliminal Sounds.
