В начале 70х годов рок сцена Ирландии подарила 

совсем немного национальных героев. Великолепный и 

невероятный Rory Gallagher, еще только пробивающиеся 

на вершину молодые THIN LIZZY, "теневые" герои хард- 

рока SKID ROW. Вот, пожалуй, и все. Но истинный 

любитель музыки тех времен вспомнит еще одно имя - 

PEGGY'S LEG. Группу, наделавшую немало шума на 

местной сцене, но так и не добившуюся всемирного 

успеха, соответствующего уровню их музыки. 

В 1970 году гитарист и певец Джимми Слевин (Jimmy 

Slevin) решил собрать вокруг себя новую команду. 

Причем Джимми решил окружить себя сплошь 

профессиональными и талантливыми исполнителями, так 

как его интересы выходили далеко за рамки обычных в 

те времена рок'н'рольных стандартов. Дополнив состав 

Джимми Гибсоном (Jimmy Gibson), Винсентом Даффи 

(Vincent Duffy) и Доном Харрисом (Don Harris) 

музыканты взяли название PEGGY'S LEG и приступили к 

концертной деятельности. 

Успех пришел к ним очень быстро, за ним последовали 

почетные выступления на национальном телевидении, 

живые эфиры на радио и т.д. В 1971 году в ежегодном 

опросе "Ножка Пеги" победила сразу в нескольких 

номинациях. Во-первых, первое место в категории 

лучшая новая группа, во-вторых, Джимми Слевин был 

признан лучшим гитаристом Ирландии, ну а Харрису 

досталось звание лучшего барабанщика. 

Кроме исполнительского мастерства музыканты 

предложили слушателям и оригинальный музыкальный 

материал, в котором удачно сочетались традиции 

мягкого фолк-рока (на манер ранних WISHBONE ASH, в 

частности их альбома "Argus"), агрессия популярного 

тогда хард-рока и, что уж совсем было в диковину 

слушателю, классические произведения. В композициях 

PEGGY'S LEG можно было встретить темы из творений 

Баха, Моцарта, Хачатуряна др. 

Но столь внезапный и быстрый успех молодого ансамбля 

столь же неожиданно замкнулся в рамках одной страны. 

Да и интерес звукозаписывающих компаний музыканты 

почувствовали далеко не сразу. Лишь в 1973м началась 

запись студийного альбома, который был выпущен в том 

же году просто непростительно малым тиражом - 500 

экземпляров. Не стоит и говорить, что этот шаг лишь 

подтвердил культовый статус группы (знакомые с 

творчеством группы были в восторге), и совершенно не 

повлиял на появление новых Фанов. 

"Grinilla" был записан в Дублине, в Eamonn Andrews 

Studio всего за 23 часа. Но опыт и профессионализм 

музыкантов никак не повлияли на качество 

предложенного материала. Пять авторских композиций 

сочетали самые сильные стороны квартета. Структура 

композиций строилась вокруг изысканных и витиеватых 

гитарных партий, которые звучали мягко и расслаблено 

(акустические фрагменты) и одновременно могли задать 

жару. В последней шестой композиции альбома Sabre 

dance музыканты отдали дань классической музыке и 

исполнили фрагмент из произведения Хачатуряна. 

После выхода пластинки дела у группы пошли явно не в 

гору. Отношения в группе стали очень напряженными, и 

лидер PEGGY'S LEG, ее основатель Джимми Слевин 

принял очень неоднозначное решение присоединиться к 

группе-конкуренту SKID ROW, которые решили 

возобновить деятельность после ухода Гари Мура (Gary 

Moore). Но и там он долго не продержался, предпочтя 

заняться продюсированием новых исполнителей. Затем 

он переехал жить в Германию, где продолжил успешную 

деятельность продюсера. 

Чуть ранее PEGGY'S LEG покинул басист Винсент Даффи, 

которого заменил John Brady, что собственно не 

отразилось на музыке группы. После ухода лидера 

оставшиеся музыканты решили продолжить деятельность 

под вывеской PEGGY'S LEG. Для этой цели они 

пригласили в состав одного из лучших гитаристов 

Ирландии - Эрика Белла (Eric Bell). 

Белл еще с конца 60х годов играл в разных группах 

средней руки вместе с Брайаном Дауни (Brian Downey). 

Одной из таких групп оказался ныне легендарный 

психоделик-роковый коллектив THE DREAMS. Позже их 

группа, с появлением в составе Филиппа Линота 

(Philip Lynott), превратилась в THIN LIZZY. С ними 

он записал три классические (и самые сильные) работы 

- "Thin Lizzy" (1971), "Shades of blue 

orphanage" (1972), "Vagabonds of the western 

world" (1973), позже входил в состав NOEL REDDING 

BAND (две пластинки в середине 70х), а затем ушел с 

большой сцены, занявшись рутинной сессионной 

работой. В 90х годах он триумфально вернулся на 

сцену с собственным блюз-роковым проектом ERIC BELL 

BAND. 

Смена музыкальных пристрастий повлияла на успех 

PEGGY'S LEG даже у, казалось бы, преданной местной 

публики. Отсутствие интереса привело к неизбежному 

распаду в 1975 году. Don Harris зарекомендовал себя 

великолепным сессионным исполнителем, в начале 80х 

сотрудничал с Девидом Боуи (David Bowie). Джимми 

Слевин кроме продюсерской деятельности попытался 

начать сольную карьеру, но не удачно. Винсент Даффи 

покончил с собой в 1983 году. На этой грустной ноте 

история славной ирландской команды PEGGY'S LEG 

закончилась. 

В 2001 году единственное наследие группы - пластинка 

"Grinilla" - с помощью гитариста-основателя Джимми 

Слевина была "отремастирована" и издана на CD. В 

качестве бонус-трека на диск была добавлена 

концертная запись неизданной ранее композиции Son of 

Grinilla, в которой можно услышать мощнейший 

концертный драйв группы, а также продолжительное 

барабанное соло Харриса. 

Formed by ace guitarist Jimi Slevin, ex of Alice / Brogue towards the end of 1972, Peggy's Leg were known for their adaptations of classical music. Their live set included covers of Yes and Emerson Lake & Palmer as well as music by Bach ("a blistering rendition of Bach's Sinfonia from Cantata Nr. 29"), Katchaturian ("Sabre Dance"), Rossini ("William Tell Overture") and Handel. Their self-released album "Grinilla" came out in late 1973. Managed by John Donohue (Mushroom) who is credited with organising the recording of their self-released album that came out in 1973: 

"This is one of the rarest albums of the seventies. Peggy's Leg were an Irish classical rock outfit and their sole album was recorded in just 23 hours. 500 copies were pressed originally and as most were sold to local fans, originals are extremely difficult to locate nowadays, particularly with the inner lyric sheet. The album consisted of six tracks and, aside from an unadventurous cover version of Love Sculpture's Sabre Dance, they comprised self-penned compositions which forged frantic heavy rock sections with soft dreamlike passages into a series of well structured songs. They also recorded a pretty frantic and indeed demented version of the William Tell Overture, which was put out on a 45."--Kissing Spell PR blurb. 

The distinctive cover artwork for "Grinilla" was designed by Bad Taste Productions, i.e. Tim Booth of Dr.Strangely Strange. The album release was preceded by a headling concert at Liberty Hall in Dublin on October 24th.

The Irish quartet Peggy's Leg issued a rare 1973 album, Grinilla, pressed in a quantity of only 500 copies, and sold primarily to fans in their region. The record's a dull fusion of progressive rock with mellower folk-rock-ish sounds, dominated by lengthy multi-sectioned tracks, and prone to some simplistic hippie-dippy lyrical philosophizing. Lead guitarist Jimi Slevin went on to join Skid Row.

Psych fans and dealers seem to hate this album, partially because when discovered it was immediately given an outrageous multi-hundred dollar price tag and inaccurate descriptions by several dealers. I may be in the minority, but I completely enjoy it. The back cover describes it as “one garage, one album, two fools, three years,” and it clearly is a labor of love. These two guys lovingly put together sixteen elaborately arranged songs on a 16-track machine. They pulled out all of the stops—some songs have horns, chorales, pedal steel, synth, etc, giving variety to a number of 70s melodic (not hard rocking) pop/rock styles. A strong sense of comedy is apparent throughout, which may be what put some people off (the album is most easily compared to Northern Front, though this is much better, or R. Stevie Moore, though this is nowhere near as good). Despite the oddness, the music itself is straightforward and of its time, with only a few dreamy ballads and one backwards bit to attract psych fans, and a tad bit of snyth to attract prog fans (i.e. it’s no surprise that both types of collectors reacted negatively to it.) The songs are well-written and tightly performed, though, and you have to give credit to a band that can pull off a calypso song with a country middle section. If the above descriptions haven’t yet sent you fleeing, I recommend it despite the naysayers. For a private press, this has very professional packaging.

When this album was pressed the sleeve wasn't ready so the first copies came in a red sleeve which could be traded at the recordstore when the original sleeve was printed.

The running order of the tracks is incorrect on both the sleeve and the cover.

Pugh's Place biography
The band was formed in Leeuwarden, Fryslan. Hans KERKHOVEN (guitars) played in a local band called EXAMPLE in 1965. The band started to play some covers before writing some new songs into a progressive rock style They released a first album in 1971, called ''West One''. They toured Netherlands in those years and made a live album in 1972 that contains some previously unreleased tracks. During that period Henk KOOISTRA (organ) and Jan Ottevange (bass guitar) left the band. When Jan VAN DER HEIDE (guitar, flute, vocals) and George SNIJDER (drums) left, it was the end for PUGH'S PLACE.

Their music is in the in the heavy rock genre with the use of flute that gives a JETHRO TULL'S sound and also they use the Hammond sound, that brings a DEEP PURPLE's influence . They show a more progressive style in their instrumental parts.
