Psych fans and dealers seem to hate this album, partially because when discovered it was immediately given an outrageous multi-hundred dollar price tag and inaccurate descriptions by several dealers. I may be in the minority, but I completely enjoy it. The back cover describes it as “one garage, one album, two fools, three years,” and it clearly is a labor of love. These two guys lovingly put together sixteen elaborately arranged songs on a 16-track machine. They pulled out all of the stops—some songs have horns, chorales, pedal steel, synth, etc, giving variety to a number of 70s melodic (not hard rocking) pop/rock styles. A strong sense of comedy is apparent throughout, which may be what put some people off (the album is most easily compared to Northern Front, though this is much better, or R. Stevie Moore, though this is nowhere near as good). Despite the oddness, the music itself is straightforward and of its time, with only a few dreamy ballads and one backwards bit to attract psych fans, and a tad bit of snyth to attract prog fans (i.e. it’s no surprise that both types of collectors reacted negatively to it.) The songs are well-written and tightly performed, though, and you have to give credit to a band that can pull off a calypso song with a country middle section. If the above descriptions haven’t yet sent you fleeing, I recommend it despite the naysayers. For a private press, this has very professional packaging.

When this album was pressed the sleeve wasn't ready so the first copies came in a red sleeve which could be traded at the recordstore when the original sleeve was printed.

The running order of the tracks is incorrect on both the sleeve and the cover.

Pugh's Place biography
The band was formed in Leeuwarden, Fryslan. Hans KERKHOVEN (guitars) played in a local band called EXAMPLE in 1965. The band started to play some covers before writing some new songs into a progressive rock style They released a first album in 1971, called ''West One''. They toured Netherlands in those years and made a live album in 1972 that contains some previously unreleased tracks. During that period Henk KOOISTRA (organ) and Jan Ottevange (bass guitar) left the band. When Jan VAN DER HEIDE (guitar, flute, vocals) and George SNIJDER (drums) left, it was the end for PUGH'S PLACE.

Their music is in the in the heavy rock genre with the use of flute that gives a JETHRO TULL'S sound and also they use the Hammond sound, that brings a DEEP PURPLE's influence . They show a more progressive style in their instrumental parts.

A lively helping of oddball private-press Americana from short-lived 70’s California country combo The Homestead Act, two of whom; Elmo & Patsy, cashed-in years later and recorded the infamous downhome-styled holiday smash “Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer”. The cover tracks on here are dynamite, with heady swirls of killer steel guitar licks abundant throughout. And FYI, the red hot session band features the oft-revered Steve Young at the top of its marquee. Vinyl rip by yours truly.

Очень любопытная бельгийская псих-проговая группа 

(вокал – Пьер Рапса, “засветившийся” позже в Jenghiz 

Khan). Открывается альбом почти 10-минутной 

психоделической многоплановой Sad Stone, в первой 

части которой обращает на себя внимание электроорган 

и вокальное многоголосье, потом начинается 

“разминка” на басовых струнах, вступает флейта, 

затем гитара с дисторшном, только ближе к концу 

появляется вокал, который на последней минуте 

превращает песню в боевик. Короткая инструментальная 

композиция Remember Ronny начинается с нежной флейты 

в сопровождении тамбурина и акустической гитары, в 

конце подключается фортепиано. Еще более коротка, 

меньше минуты, Dracula's Way Of Makin' Love – 

звуковой коллаж из оргастических стонов и 

диссонансных аккордов, после которой звучит 

психоделическая дилогия Have A Coke/Ugly Dirty Man с 

активным использованием джазовых ритмических 

структур. Первая часть ее построена на том, что ритм 

держится на нижнем регистре гитары, а мелодию ведет 

флейта, вторая, более динамичная, – на сочетании бас- 

гитары и органа с короткими выходами флейты. Следом 

идут две коротких вещи: мечтательная оркестрованная 

Tower Of Illusion и Spiders In Your Hair с 

меняющимся рисунком и определенным влиянием джаза. 

Главная вещь альбома – 18-минутная сюита Deborah, 

Jane And Laurelie в пяти частях. Первая часть, 

Deborah, начинающаяся как фортепианная пьеса, быстро 

меняет основную тему, инициативу перехватывает 

хэммонд, и вскоре уже солирует “вибрирующий” бас с 

короткими вздохами тубы. Вторая часть – Fish с 

бульканьем воды – звучит ближе к фолку и джазу 

одновременно, третья – Days, Dream, Hopes – прог- 

баллада с органом, скрипичной секцией и легкими 

джазовыми фортепианными наигрышами, четвертая – Pink 

Clouds – нервная мелодия с флейтой и фортепиано, 

переходящая с вступлением церковного органа в 

заключительную часть – Laurelie, Laurelie. Она по 

большей части тоже имеет слегка приджазованную 

структуру, по мере звучания постепенно все 

ускоряется, обрастает шумами, в конце концов 

растворяется в перкуссии и затихает.

Эта французская психоделическая группа из Нормандии. 

Записала пару синглов и свой единственный альбом, к сожалению, так и не изданный в 1968 году. На их музыку явное влияние оказали: группа Cream и Jimi Hendrix, а гитарные партии из этого альбома напоминают нам о Рэнди Холдене. Пожалуй, один из лучших альбомов того времени за всю историю Франции!
